How To Develop A Pre-Shot Routine Now!
One of the biggest transformations was in developing my pre shot routine. This is not just second rate advice I think "might" help the average Golfer. When you are practicing, it is critical that you step behind every shot you are going to hit so that when you are on the course you follow this routine as well. This accomplishes many very important things:
1. It relaxes the nerves knowing you are following a routine you have done hundreds of times.
2. It allows you to focus on the target and the image you have created of the flight of the ball instead of meaningless swing thoughts, which will only distract.
3. When you are focused on the target, you swing closer to what I call, "your athletic rhythm". This is the rhythm you swing at when you hit a bad shot, lay another ball down, simply swing at it, and invariably hit it dead straight. (you weren't thinking)
Here is my routine:
(note: I struggled with this at first. The temptation when practicing is to hit ball after ball without doing a preshot routine. But force yourself to do it after EVERY shot. It will be worth it in the long run. I promise)
1. I stand behind the ball and take my left hand grip, making sure it's correct. I also take a big deep breath.
2. I visualize where I want the ball to end up (possibly the ball rolling to that spot or spinning back to it), the flight of the ball to that spot, and then ultimately the swing it took to make that ball flight.
3. I try to also feel the feeling of a solid strike and mesh that into the rest of my vision.
4. I set up to the ball, holding that feeling and vision in my mind as best I can. One thing to realize is that the more detail you can imagine, the better. It is harder, but you will be able to keep the ball flight image in your mind longer and fight off thoughts of mishitting the ball.
5. I waggle the club a little, assuring I am comfortable.
6. I take one look at the target and then swing.
Note: It was not until I was around a 10 or 12 handicap that I started to imagine the ball flight of my shots. If your handicap is above that I don't think you make solid contact enough to warrant this visualization technique. I think you should develop a preshot routine to relax, but work on your swing mechanics more, as visualization would do little to a person who rarely plays and/or has no foundation to his/her swing.
